Interface (024-102-NPO) is a non-profit, NGO that promotes the participation of adults and children who have complex communication needs.
A severe communication impairment often results in social isolation and loneliness. As a result, most people with a speech disability never reach their full potential or become productive members of society unless provided with Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) strategies.
What does it mean to have complex communication needs?
"Speech is the most important thing we have. It makes us a person and not a thing. No one should ever have to be a thing."
"So you can't talk, and it is boring and frustrating and nobody quite understands how bad it really is. If you sit around and think about all the things you used to be able to do, that you can't do now, you'll be a miserable wreck and no one will want to hang around you long"
The Centre for Augmentative and Alternative Communication at the University of Pretoria is affiliated to Interface South Africa and acts as the main facilitator of training in AAC nationwide.
